Pilot: 6 buyer prompts x 2 engines (ChatGPT gpt-4o-mini, Perplexity sonar), 11 of 12 calls succeeded, 19 Oct 2026. ChatGPT columns show answers mentioning the vendor out of 6; Perplexity out of 5. Prompts 3 and 4 name Incode, Persona, Veriff, Jumio, Onfido and Socure, so their mention rates are inflated by design. Gap = product rank minus AI rank; positive means AI rank is better.

The gap is the insight.

Product quality and AI visibility diverge. Veriff leads the AI leaderboard (8 of 11 answers) but ranks 5th in the product score. Persona leads the product score but appears in 5 of 11 answers. Incode, second in product, appears in 3. AU10TIX appears in none.

That is not a verdict on the products. It is what happens when AI answers are assembled from a small set of sources: the model recommends what it can find and cite, not necessarily what is best. For vendors, the operational question is which sources to fix; for buyers, it is which answers to double-check.

Research: demand, citations and category confusion

The benchmark sits on four data layers: keyword demand, the citations AI retrieves, the entities it maps to the category, and the answers themselves. This is the full research copy.

7,938AI mentions for "identity verification"
111,479AI search volume, broader query
300mentions for "identity verification vendors"
26×consumer vs vendor mention gap

1. Demand

  • identity verification (AI volume)1,929
  • identity verification vendors (Google/mo)70
  • identity verification vendors (AI volume)2
  • KYC providers (Google/mo)50
  • KYC providers (AI volume)24
  • best identity verification platform (AI)4

US/EN, Oct 2026. The keyword-level AI volume is 1,929; the broader-query estimate is 111,479. They use different aggregation levels and are not directly comparable. Broad Google volume for "identity verification" was not part of this pull.

2. What the answers look like

“A fintech should shortlist Jumio, Entrust Identity Verification (formerly Onfido), Veriff, Sumsub, and Trulioo.”Perplexity · prompt 1
“Here are five identity verification vendors to consider: 1. Jumio ... 2. IDnow ...”ChatGPT · prompt 1

Excerpts from the pilot answers. The full text and citations are held in the raw run.

3. Where AI gets the answer

  • Reddit983
  • Wikipedia318
  • IRS272
  • LegalClarity263
  • NerdWallet201

Top domains cited in ChatGPT answers for "identity verification", US/EN. Reddit alone is cited more than the next three domains combined.

4. What AI thinks the category is

  • organization3,144
  • company2,478
  • brand981
  • software919
  • mobile app893

Top brand entities: TransUnion 168, IRS 158, Experian 125, Equifax 122, ID.me 91.

Brand-entity categories around the broad term; categories overlap, so they do not sum to the mention total. Consumer, credit and government entities dominate; B2B vendors are a minority.

5. The vendor query is 26× thinner

  • total mentions · identity verification vendors300
  • Reddit46
  • NIST20
  • readsludge20
  • Software Advice / G219 / 18

The top brand entities in the vendor query are Microsoft (26), "financial technology company" (23) and three generic US company descriptions (20 each). Actual identity vendors barely register: Jumio 2, Veriff 2.

The B2B vendor query has 300 mentions versus 7,938 for the broad term. The category has a demand problem before it has a vendor problem.

US SERP, top 5 organic results per query, October 2026. Listicles and comparison sites dominate; vendor pages are rare.

7. What this means for vendors

For the broad term "identity verification", the most-mentioned brands are TransUnion, the IRS, Experian, Equifax and ID.me. That is consumer credit and tax identity, not B2B identity verification vendors.

The reported sources and entity counts suggest category ambiguity. This pilot does not establish that citation footprint causes vendor recommendations or that a more frequently mentioned vendor is a better product.

That is why a vendor can score 85.9 on product and appear in 5 of 11 answers, while a lower-scored vendor appears in 8.

Methodology

Product score: each vendor is scored 0-100 on six criteria, then weighted. Sources: public documentation, integration directories, product pages and buyer reviews as of 19 October 2026.

AI visibility: a pilot of six buyer prompts across ChatGPT (gpt-4o-mini) and Perplexity (sonar), with web search enabled. 11 of 12 calls succeeded; one Perplexity call returned a payment error. We counted the answers that mention each vendor.

  1. Which identity verification vendors should a fintech evaluate in 2026?
  2. Best identity verification platform for a global fintech onboarding users in 30+ countries.
  3. Compare Incode, Persona and Veriff for identity verification.
  4. Which KYC vendor is best for banks: Jumio, Onfido or Socure?
  5. Identity verification API for developers: which vendors have the best docs and sandbox?
  6. Best identity verification provider for deepfake and liveness detection in 2026.

Prompts 3 and 4 name vendors. Those vendors' mention rates are inflated by design; the pilot is directional, not a neutral share-of-market estimate. The full 25-prompt baseline separates prompted and unprompted mentions.

Data: keyword, SERP, AI mention and AI response data, US/EN, 19 October 2026. Search volumes are monthly averages; AI volumes are estimates.

FAQ

How is the product score calculated?

Weighted sum of six 0-100 criteria: document coverage (25%), biometrics and liveness (20%), fraud and risk signals (15%), developer experience (15%), pricing transparency (10%) and enterprise fit (15%).

How was AI visibility measured?

A pilot of six buyer prompts across ChatGPT (gpt-4o-mini) and Perplexity (sonar), with web search enabled, produced 11 of 12 answers; one Perplexity call failed. We counted how many answers mentioned each vendor. Prompts 3 and 4 named vendors, so those mention rates are inflated.

Did vendors pay for placement?

No. Vendors do not pay for placement or scores. The product score is editorial; the AI pilot used independent prompts.

Why does AI visibility differ from product quality?

AI answers are assembled from a small set of cited sources, not from an evaluation of product quality. A strong product can still be absent from the sources the model trusts.
